His parents, Elrick and Lucille Berthiaume, worked tirelessly to provide for their seven children, with Al joining the workforce at just 16 years old after leaving school in the tenth grade.

Despite the challenges they faced, Al's determination to provide for his own family drove him to work multiple odd jobs, eventually landing a position at National Nail Company in the mid-1960s. He started his own sign painting business and worked steadily every day, earning a reputation as a hard worker and dedicated provider.

In 1948, Al met Martha Hart at Ramona Gardens Amusement Park, and their relationship blossomed over the next three years before marrying in 1951. Together, they had three wonderful children - Rick, Bob, and Mary Kay. Al often said that Martha was the most important person in his life, and she treated him with kindness and respect every day of their marriage.

Throughout his life, Al's work ethic and dedication inspired those around him. He may have been described as a 'workaholic,' but he knew firsthand what it meant to do without the basic necessities needed to live day to day. His experiences growing up in poverty only strengthened his resolve to provide a better life for his family.
